May 2025 – the coldest in the history of observations

May 2025 may become the coldest month in the history of meteorological observations. This was reported by Tetiana Adamenko, head of the agro-meteorological department of the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center. She emphasized that the cold spring has created a threat to crops and rising prices.

“Although the month has not yet ended, I have analyzed that a similar cold May with the current temperature regime was only in 1999. This year’s May has a chance of being even colder,” she noted.

According to Adamenko, people need to realize that they are not safe from such negative phenomena in the future. She added: “One has to pay for everything: for having April temperatures in January and May temperatures in March.”

Negative consequences for agriculture

In April, the temperature dropped from 19 degrees Celsius to sub-zero values, with frosts recorded at levels of 5-6 degrees. This sharp change in weather greatly affected not only ordinary citizens, who had to wear warm clothes again, but also agricultural producers who suffered significant losses due to the weather conditions. The crops of grains, vegetables, and fruit trees were under threat.

The average temperature for the first two decades of May was 5°C lower than the climatic norm, and the amount of precipitation exceeded the monthly norm. Freezing was also noted at night.

The abnormally cold May of 2025 has serious consequences for crops and agriculture in general. Without an improvement in weather conditions, the situation may worsen, leading to additional problems for farmers and consumers of products. It is necessary to closely monitor the developments and take appropriate measures to mitigate possible losses in agriculture.
