Words that Ukrainians mistakenly consider Russian. Linguist compiled a list.

Linguist Olha Vasylieva compiled a list of 200 words that some Ukrainians consider Russianisms, but are actually Ukrainian. She recommends using these words in speech, as they are our own. This information was published in the column of 'Hromadske' under the title 'Language Issue'.
According to Vasylieva, not all words that sound similar to Russian are Russianisms. It is important to check them in the dictionary of Borys Hrinchenko. The policy of rapprochement between the Ukrainian and Russian languages flourished in the past, so some words transitioned into the Ukrainian language even since the Time of the tsar.
200 'pseudo-Russianisms' from Hrinchenko's dictionary
- B: thigh, free, fast, quickly, to shave, future, future / future.
- V: ancient, to see, high, response, to respond (response, to respond), to breathe (to rest), branch, to fall in love, to stink, time, coal.
- H: carnation, to nail, where / nowhere, foolish, year, city, thunderous, cargo, to load, mud.
- etc.
The use of outdated words is acceptable in modern language to avoid similarities with Russian expressions. Language constantly evolves, so some words can be restored and used in contemporary context.
The linguist also explained the concept of the word 'helper', indicating that this word is Ukrainian and has other synonyms. Vasylieva urged to expand the vocabulary and not prohibit the use of certain words in speech.
During the interview, linguist Olha Vasylieva reminded Ukrainians that using Ukrainian words, even those once perceived as Russian, contributes to the development and preservation of the Ukrainian language in its natural form. It is also a matter of national self-identification through language. After the quotes from linguist Olha Vasylieva, one can see how important it is to take care of the Ukrainian language, to honor and use all its expressions, even those that may seem outdated. It is worth reflecting on one's vocabulary and attitude towards language. It should be understood that language is an important aspect of national self-identification and Ukrainian culture as a whole.
