The analytical OSINT project Deep State, together with the Cultural Forces platform, has presented a new interactive map dedicated to the liberation of Crimea from the Bolsheviks in April 1918. The main goal of this project is to actualize the heroic pages of Ukrainian history and promote the national era of secrets that are revealed through the prism of victories.
There are many significant events and people in the pages of Ukrainian history. It is essential to remember them and pass them on to future generations so that they grow up with an understanding of who they are. Throughout all times, creative approaches have been sought to present all these events from an interesting perspective and attract as much attention as possible, so we hope this project will bring diversity and interest to one of the most remarkable operations of the Ukrainian army - the campaign to Crimea led by Petro Bolbochan, to be proud of and enjoy the might and strength of our military. Thanks to this map, users can familiarize themselves with the chronology of the operation, track the route of the Zaporizhzhia Corps, and get acquainted with archival materials and documents. This opportunity opens doors to educational and scientific initiatives that will help shape modern national identity. Scientists and participants of the Cultural Forces platform emphasize the need to rethink national history, focusing on the history of struggle and victories, rather than just on the tragedies of the past.
Instead of a sacrificial narrative of national history, the culture of memory should focus on the history of struggle and victories. The Crimean operation, led by Colonel Petro Bolbochan, was a very significant stage in the liberation of Crimea from the Bolsheviks. Cooperation with the German army and Crimean Tatar rebels allowed the UPR troops to be the first to liberate Simferopol and raise Ukrainian flags on the ships of the Black Sea Fleet. It is important to note that even in the white-guard memoir literature, there are testimonies about the local population's support for the Ukrainian troops in Crimea. They joyfully took to the streets with Ukrainian flags and portraits of Taras Shevchenko. And that is why on April 29, 1918, Ukrainian flags were raised on the ships of the Black Sea Fleet in Sevastopol. The interactive map can be found on the Deep State website. This project is an important step in studying and popularizing Ukrainian history and its heroic pages that must be passed on to future generations.
